BIOGRAPHY OF DAVID CARLISLE
As a drum set player and symphonic percussionist, David Carlisle has performed in a jazz quartet with Moe Koffman in front of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra under the direction of David Amram. He has freelanced with the Toronto production of Miss Saigon, most of the symphony orchestras in the Bay Area, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and Eastman's Schlossfestspiele Orchestra in Heidelberg, Germany. As a chamber musician, he has performed with composer Steve Reich, Nexus, Percussion Group Cincinnati, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, American Festival of New Music, Berkeley Contemporary Chamber Players, Chamber Music Society of Sacramento, Earplay, Empyrean Ensemble, Belvedere Chamber Music Festival, Queen of Puddings Music Theatre, Kokoro Dance and Joe Ink Dance Company. Carlisle performed Hans Werner Henze's opera "El Cimarrón," at the Banff Centre and Toronto's Autumn Leaf Festival. As a studio drummer, he has recorded at Skywalker Sound in a project produced and engineered by Mark S. Willsher. Recordings of Carlisle can be found on the Naxos Music Library. With pianist Adrienne Park, Carlisle co-founded DivaDi, a piano-percussion duo that composes their own repertoire and commissions new works from composers on a collaborative basis. DivaDi will perform as guest artists at the 2009 Percussive Arts Society International Convention's Focus Day, performing Carlisle's percussion duo "Mad Cow." They recently performed recitals at the University of Memphis, the University of Mississippi and at the Day of Percussion in both Mississippi and West Tennessee. This season, DivaDi will premiere a new work by Californian composer Howard Hersh entitled "FUSE." Carlisle taught percussion at the University of California at both Davis and Berkeley. He is currently on faculty at the University of Mississippi, where he has taught a wide variety of courses: Introduction to World Music Cultures, Introduction to Music Technology, Musicianship and Harmony and a large section of Introduction to Music, in which he incorporates in-class live performances and Interwrite Response technology. Carlisle has a Bachelor of Music and Performers Certificate from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied percussion with John Beck. He completed a Master of Music at the University of Toronto, where he studied percussion with Russell Hartenberger and Robin Engelman. Carlisle has studied tabla with Bob Becker and Pandit Sharda Sahai. He has also studied Jim Blackley's approach to drumset with Sean Eisenberg. He is completing a Doctor of Musical Arts at the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, where he studies percussion with Allen Otte, James Culley and Russell Burge of the Percussion Group Cincinnati and drumset with big band great John Von Ohlen.
